Pulse Oximeter

Category of care: Respiratory Support

Problem: A newborn’s blood oxygen levels can indicate a need for additional respiratory support.

Solution: Detecting hypoxia, low oxygen levels, in newborns using a pulse oximeter can help clinicians know when to provide life saving respiratory support. When supplemental oxygen is provided to newborns, clinicians use a pulse oximeter to monitor SpO2 levels to ensure it remains in a healthy theraputic range. Too high a Sp02 concentration can lead to complications, such as retinopathy of prematurity (ROP).
