Radiant Warmer

Category of care: Thermal Management

Problem: An estimated 17 million newborns experience hypothermia per year in low-resource settings. Hypothermia is recognized by the WHO as a leading factor in infant mortality.

Solution: Maintaining the appropriate body temperature of a newborn through monitoring and warming improves outcomes related to hypothermia and infection. When Kangaroo Mother Care is unavailable or insufficient, radiant warmers are used to keep a baby warm. Monitoring the newborn’s body temperature allows caregivers to address low body temperatures and avoid rapid swings in body temperatures that also can be harmful.
