Maternal and newborn mortality remains one of the most urgent and solvable challenges in global health.
In a new article published by AllAfrica, partners from the Mohamed bin Zayed Foundation for Humanity, the Beginnings Fund, and NEST360 highlight the need for sustained investment in health systems, skilled health workers, and proven innovations that save lives. They demonstrate the importance of strong data systems to track lifesaving newborn interventions such as CPAP, Kangaroo Mother Care, phototherapy, and hypothermia prevention.
The piece includes insights from Dr Natasha Rhoda, Senior Neonatology Advisor on the NEST360 Technical Advisory Team, who emphasizes that while more births in sub-Saharan Africa are now taking place in health facilities, significant gaps in the quality of newborn care remain. Closing these gaps requires the right infrastructure, appropriate technologies, skilled health workers, and strong data systems to guide improvement. One of the most significant policy shifts needed to improve newborn survival is for governments to create dedicated investment plans for newborn care.
Through its systems-based approach, combining technology, education, and data, NEST360 works with governments and partners to strengthen hospital care for small and sick newborns and accelerate progress toward ending preventable newborn deaths.
